Federal Roads Office FEDRO
The motorway maintenance depot at the Wankdorf junction in Bern serves the cantonal road service as a base for maintaining the motorway network in the region. The phased conversion is a result of the priority requirement for smooth operation.
The new building includes a vehicle hall for 16 lorries, a workshop and a locksmith's shop for vehicle maintenance, a car wash and various outbuildings for storing the lorries' extensive equipment. The offices of the operations management and the crew rooms as well as a multi-purpose room are located on the upper floor. The facility is complemented by three 25m high salt silos, a salt bunker for handling and a petrol station. The new building meets high environmental standards with the use of sawn timber from road maintenance for heating, the realisation of a comprehensive photovoltaic system, the reuse of surface water for vehicle maintenance and compliance with the Minergie standard for the building envelope and installations.
The prefabricated timber construction is the appropriate response to the requirements of phased construction and the specific needs of the users. The clear building structure guarantees long-term utility value and meets the urban planning requirements of the exposed situation.
