Increased passenger numbers and greater pressure on public facilities – the new Bubenberg Centre (BBZ) is regarded as a key project within the extensive expansion of Bern railway station.
The new building is situated in a prominent location within the UNESCO perimeter, along the historic arterial route and in the extension of Hirschengraben.
From 2031, the Bubenberg Centre will be the second main entrance to the station.
In terms of volume and appearance, the new building aims to form a unified whole with the adjacent BBZ 8 in the future. Together with the existing main entrance, the station will appear within the stone city in the form of glass structures. The building’s physical footprint is reduced to a minimum at ground floor level, maximising the space allocated to the public realm. Passengers exiting the station reach the column-free entrance hall, which opens onto the city, via a generous staircase. The building and the urban space merge. The column-free hall, with the office block floating above it, creates an appearance befitting the station entrance.
