Description
The striking high-rise in the east of Bern is visible from afar. The research and development centre of the former PTT (Post, Telephone and Telegraph) is the tallest building in the city of Bern after the cathedral. When it was completed in 1972, it was the tallest non-sacred building in Switzerland.
The listed building was originally constructed as a laboratory and office tower. Our task was to preserve the existing structure whilst enabling a new use: the transformation of the building into a residential block.
Through targeted interventions, the base is opened up, connecting the lobby on the first floor to street level. The removal of the mezzanine floor creates a spacious, two-storey lobby. The 17 residential floors feature alternating floor types, offering a wide range of living options. The top floors and the roof terrace have been redesigned as communal spaces for socialising and relaxation, and complemented by an outdoor kitchen with a magnificent view of the Bernese Alps.
