Further information

The industrial building from the early 19th century is an impressive testimony to early industrialisation and the use of natural resources. Like many buildings of the time, it utilised the water power of the Worble. A mill canal, which runs beneath the cantilevered wooden arbours in the south directly past the base storey, once drove the mill wheels. These provided the energy for the production of pasta, chocolate or coffee essence. Over the centuries, the building has been extended and remodelled several times. Today, after extensive renovation and conversion, it presents itself in a new guise: a listed building that combines modern living with its industrial history. The traces of the past are still recognisable everywhere: The grinding marks of the mill wheels on the brickwork, the spacious production rooms with their ceiling openings for transporting goods or the long corridors leading to the wooden arbours. These elements tell of an industrial past that has been carefully integrated into a new utilisation concept. Twelve flats with communal rooms were created as part of the conversion. The former threshing floor with its characteristic arched doorways is particularly striking. This area now serves as a spacious access area, which is also used as a common room. The flats and the impressive roof truss, which has been preserved in its original construction, can be accessed from here. There is now space for three loft flats. An internal atrium ensures that daylight reaches the inside of the building. The three-part structure of the building - south, centre and north sections - was retained and forms the spatial framework for the new residential units. The remodelling followed a clear design approach: existing structures were retained wherever possible. Only where the load-bearing structures no longer met today's requirements were specific additions made. New building components are recognisable as contemporary interventions and stand in deliberate contrast to the historical substance. The result is an ensemble that respects the past while meeting the requirements of the present.
