On Sunday evening, Lichtspiel Bern is showing the short film "Helfers Häuser" as well as short films from the archive.
Helfers Häuser - architecture at second glance
by Natalie Schärer, event organised in cooperation with the Bernese Heritage Society, Bern-Mittelland region
The short film Helfers Häuser deals with the work of Bernese architect Eduard Helfer (1920-1981). With more than 450 building projects, Helfer is considered one of the pioneers of social housing construction in the post-war period and played a key role in shaping the skyline of western Bern with his buildings. Today, around half a century later, however, he is largely unknown even among experts. In Helfer's Houses, Natalie Schärer explores how Eduard Helfer has been forgotten and sets out in search of the character and reception of his buildings.
Short films
For well over 1,200 weeks, the Lichtspiel has been showing a short film programme every Sunday evening with gems from the house archive. Commercials and trailers, documentaries and newsreels, experimental films, amateur material and music clips are brought together to create unique programmes from the museum's own collection of around 25,000 films. The collages, which are loosely organised around a focal point, move us to tears, lead to homeric laughter, make us shudder, caress our souls, break the silence or remain silent.
