The heart of Bern Stadttheater is the historic auditorium. Built in 1903 and rooted in historicism, it was due for a complete refurbishment in 2015. The technical systems are integrated into the listed building’s context so as not to be conspicuous – neither the building and stage technical adaptations nor the measures to improve the acoustics. The theatrical atmosphere pervades the floors, conveying elegance and solemnity. Nothing should disturb the sensory experience, not even during the interval. The walnut bar counter is a popular spot, the jewel in the foyer on the first floor. A chat here, a greeting there – that’s all part of it. Even the mundane trip to the toilet does not interrupt the mood that has now settled in: it, too, is a sensory experience.
