Description

Following a protracted tug-of-war over the ideal location, the Liebefeld district of Köniz gained its Reformed church centre in 1967 with the construction of St Thomas’ Church. Architect Franz Meister combined the church, the parish hall and other ancillary rooms on a partly sloping site to create an impressive complex. The inviting design of the outdoor space sets the scene for the church building, which is as distinctive as it is typical of its era, featuring concrete, copper and wood used expressively and with aesthetic clarity. Adorned with striking stained-glass windows and murals, St Thomas’ Church is one of the most artistically compelling ecclesiastical creations of its time in the country.
