2023–2024: Planning
2024–2025: Implementation
On Konsumstrasse in Bern, a vacant office building dating from the 1970s has been converted into contemporary residential accommodation. The original design by architect Eduard Franz Helfer is characterised by a partition-wall construction and a variety of access options – qualities that were deliberately retained for the conversion.
The architectural concept is based on a resource-efficient approach to the existing building fabric and the reuse of existing components. This enabled the creation of five flats and two commercial units on the ground floor. A central element of the conversion is the former internal office circulation system, which has been reworked and transformed into the connecting spatial feature of a newly created triplex flat. The residential offering is complemented by units of varying sizes – from compact studios to 4.5-room flats – thereby promoting social diversity. The interiors are characterised by a robust yet homely finish. New timber walls and windows create a warm atmosphere, whilst the original load-bearing structure allows for generous natural light.
