The Morillon is a Campagne, as the country houses of patrician families were called - it is, of course, the last in a long line. Escaping the smelly and noisy city in summer was still a driving force behind building a country residence. It made it possible to live comfortably and offered prestigious space for social occasions. But the Morillon is actually also a villa, because it is located close to the city and has moved away from the 18th century form of the Bernese country estate. Its design harks back to Italian models of the 16th century. It is clear that villas by Andrea Palladio played a key role for the young architect Ludwig Osterrieth when he drew up the project in 1830. The client, Friedrich Ludwig v. Wattenwyl, had an interest in architecture and art. Inheritances and marriage enabled him to erect an extraordinary building, which was an almost hidden treasure trove of Bernese history and art until 2018. Since then, the building has been restored, becoming a place to work and open to the public for cultural events.
