The polygonal structure of the new Marzili Primary School building blends seamlessly into the existing listed school and park grounds, which form a historically significant ensemble in the heart of the city of Bern. The ground floor houses the all-day school, the multi-purpose room and the library, all of which benefit from direct access to the outdoor area. The entrance halls at the open passageway, which links the city quarter and the green space, provide access via separate staircases to the upper floors, where the traditional school facilities and classrooms are located. Four classrooms each form a neighbourhood – a cluster – grouped around the respective circulation area. The elongated central zone between the clusters serves as an access area but can also be used as an open learning landscape. A row of doors along the façades creates a permeable spatial structure that allows for diverse patterns of movement and interaction throughout the building. The school building has been constructed to the Minergie P Eco standard and is designed as a hybrid structure. The structural concept of the vertical, internal concrete cores – which expand like tree crowns on the upper floors – and the prefabricated elements of the load-bearing timber structure of the façade allow for great internal flexibility, as all partition walls are designed as non-load-bearing components.
