Planning and execution

The foundation stone for Bern Minster, one of Switzerland’s most important late-Gothic churches, was laid in 1421. Matthäus Ensinger was in charge of the construction. The lower square section of the tower was completed in 1489. It was not until 1889–1893 that the tower was completed in the Neo-Gothic style, based on plans by the Ulm architect August Beyer and under the supervision of August Müller. The tower stands 100.6 metres tall.

Description

Completed in 1897, the fire watchtower is situated on the 8th floor, high above Bern’s old town. The former fire watchtower consists of a bedroom and a lounge. A tiled stove connects the two rooms. The beds, wall cupboards and tiled stove are original and can be viewed during guided tours.
