1892–1894: Built to plans by André Lambert
2003–2009: Extension by :mlzd
2027–2031: Complete refurbishment by ARGE Bellorini Architekt:innen / Kast Kaeppeli Architekten
The Bern Historical Museum was built in 1894 to a design by André Lambert in the Historicist style, taking its cue from medieval architectural forms and castles. Between 2006 and 2009, the cube designed by :mlzd Architekten was added to the existing complex: a crystalline concrete shell characterises the south side, whilst a glass north façade mirrors the castle-like old building. Now, after 135 years, a comprehensive refurbishment is due for the first time: the project by the consortium Bellorini Architekt·innen / Kast Kaeppeli Architekten combines the historic fabric with contemporary architecture, creating light-filled spaces and an open entrance hall. Old and new enter into an exciting, harmonious dialogue.
