At the western abutment of the Monbijou Bridge in Bern, Bauart has converted a 1960s office block into a mixed-use residential building. The project embodies a ‘city within a city’, connecting two urban levels and diverse functions, and breathing new life into this rough, urban site.
At the western bridgehead, 53 small flats (1.5-room, 2.5-room and 3.5-room), lofts for one- and two-person households, and apartments for short-term stays have been created. In addition to the flats, a small restaurant at bridge level and communal facilities such as a roof terrace, a launderette and easily accessible bicycle storage rooms on both city levels enrich the diverse offering. The building’s base also houses further facilities in the areas of leisure, sport and retail, which are directly connected to the new residential building. With its multifunctional structure, the building embodies a city within a city.
The different housing typologies are arranged according to the location of the flat within the development, or rather the associated locational qualities. The mix of flats changes from bottom to top, and the standard of finish responds to orientation and views.
