The site of the former Warmbächliweg waste incineration plant is being transformed into a new urban quarter for living and working. The well-connected site is located in the Hollingen district, close to Bern city centre and in the immediate vicinity of Inselspital. The project takes the scale of the waste incineration plant and the surrounding industrial estate as its starting point to create an urban, mixed-use neighbourhood. The urban planning framework works with the scale, the undulating topography and the site’s pivotal role between the neighbourhood, sports and leisure areas, the industrial estate and the railway tracks.
In order to give the future neighbourhood a unique identity, but also to save as much grey energy as possible and close resource cycles, the existing structures have been retained as far as possible. The former Toblerhaus at Güterstrasse 8 now houses innovative forms of housing, studios, restaurants and commercial units. The former waste incineration plant’s parking hall continues to be used as an underground car park. And the foundations of the buildings that were no longer suitable for further use are left in the ground as far as possible. The new buildings reflect the scale of the surrounding area, yet the functionally and spatially rich base zones create a smooth and vibrant transition between private and public space. This allows the new residents of the neighbourhood to benefit both from the expansive views and from a diverse neighbourhood life.
