Description

After almost six years of construction, the historic walls of the Kaiserhaus are being opened up to create a vibrant urban space where light, spaces and pathways tell stories of the past and present. With dining, retail and urban experiences, as well as apartments and offices on the upper floors, a diverse hub of interaction, identity and urban vitality is emerging in the Upper Old Town.

Between Marktstrasse and Amtshausgasse lies this historically evolved ensemble, whose origins date back to the 19th century and which was later integrated into a large-scale department store complex, the Kaiserhaus. The renovation seizes the opportunity to restore the structures that were dismantled in the 1970s, thereby creating an inner-city space with a high degree of public accessibility.
The reopened Kaiserhof forms the centrepiece: a spacious passageway leading from both Marktgasse and Amtshausgasse into the open courtyard enables attractive thoroughfares and atmospheric spaces. Through careful uncovering, restoration and completion of the historic façades, combined with a bespoke colour and material scheme, the original five buildings are once again clearly discernible. They reveal their own identities, yet form a coherent, harmonious whole.
