Further information

Three almost 200-year-old buildings make up the group of farms on Schwandiweg in Worblental. Their gables each face south-west. Gardens and open spaces stretch out between them. All of the buildings are constructed from sandstone on the ground floor and timber-framed construction on the upper floors. Nine flats, a day-care centre and numerous intermediate and outdoor spaces have been carefully renovated and made habitable and tangible.

Schwandiweg 12 farmhouse
The farmhouse is divided into the residential part and the farm part with stable and hayloft under a connecting roof. The Tenn and Hochtenn serve as a link between the two former uses. The character and use of the Tenn as an open and unheated access node was retained in the project. Two flats on the ground and upper floors, as well as two attic flats in the attic space previously used as a hayloft, will be extended. The room structure will be retained. Where new rooms are created, these will be recognisable as light wooden fixtures. Layer by layer, the renovation work revealed original components such as the wall panelling on the upper floor and the stone floors on the ground floor. These materials were preserved with the utmost care, and some were even dismantled and reassembled. Four bulkhead-like maisonette flats in timber construction are set in the economic section. They are set back from the façade on the upper floor, thus creating more private open spaces behind the filter of the gable wall made of horizontal wooden planks. The attic space in the farm section, the former hayloft, remains unfinished. The "play stage" expands the available space with a deliberately unprogrammed area. Temporary, changing types of gatherings are made possible here. Heating is provided by connecting a long-distance pipe to the Bernapark heating centre. The technical centre will be installed underground in an existing deepened septic tank.

Stöckli Schwandiweg 10
On the same axis as the farmhouse is the Stöckli with one flat on the ground floor and one on the upper floor. The directly adjacent courtyard with its old fruit trees offers a beautiful view.

Stöckli Schwandiweg 14
Set back from the road, the "Stöckli" with its barn and annexes is set apart from the rest. Its untreated, sun-blackened wood makes it stand out from the other buildings. The track-sided, wood-shingled façade has even been renovated in the local style. Together with the shed and the track-side extension, a multi-layered space was created for the daycare centre on the lower two floors. By connecting the Schopf to the Stöckli with the new connecting corridor, a quiet inner courtyard was created, the entrance and play area of the daycare centre. The Stöckli still has its original mullioned windows with historic fittings. The fittings were sandblasted and left untreated, the glass replaced with insulating glass. The historic wall panelling was also reinstalled after the insulation work. The pergolas not only provide a covered space for playing, but also provide access to the upper floor with a small flat over two storeys up to the roof. The flat benefits as an additional room from the existing thermally insulated north-facing pergola.

Courtyard and garden
The old farmhouse garden, the day-care centre garden, the large old walnut tree. The outdoor space offers a variety of opportunities for movement through the building and the grounds. And where there is movement, encounters can take place. Informal and uncomplicated, outside and inside.
