SfG BB Bernapark

After less than 3.5 years of planning and realisation, a unique campus atmosphere and inspiring learning environment have been created. Flexible classrooms, spacious studios and workshops as well as offices, a cafeteria, library and common rooms characterise the new location.

A central concern of the project was to preserve the historical character of the building. The patina of 150 years of industrial history was to remain visible and the buildings were to be adapted to the new use in line with the additive development history of the industrial site. This approach was realised through the almost complete preservation of the primary structure, additive further construction, system separation and a minimalist material concept. New fixtures blend harmoniously into the existing structures. The original window openings were largely retained and were only added to or enlarged where absolutely necessary. For larger interventions, such as the striking spiral staircase of the new main access, the space created by the demolition of two concrete silos was utilised. Due to its temporary use, the building technology was reduced to the necessary minimum and remains visible, in keeping with the industrial history of the building.
