As the historic centre, the Weissenstein Estate defines the Weissenstein railway workers’ estate, built between 1919 and 1925, which is one of Switzerland’s most significant garden city developments. The late-Baroque manor house was taken over by the Bern Railway Workers’ Building Cooperative in 1920, renovated and extended, and from then on played a central role within the estate. The recent development builds on this history, combining the careful preservation of the historic building fabric with new communal, age-appropriate and residential uses.
