1932 Construction of the Engehalde substation
1971 Refurbishment
2022–2026 Refurbishment and modernisation by Penzel Valier AG, Zurich
The Engehalde substation (UW) is a cornerstone of the electricity supply for the city of Bern. Around 35,000 large enterprises, SMEs and private customers are reliably supplied with energy from here.
The original substation was built in 1932 and last underwent a comprehensive refurbishment in 1971. To ensure long-term security of supply, the facility was completely refurbished between April 2022 and March 2026. The project involved the construction of a new substation building whilst preserving the listed assembly tower, the installation of modern energy technology systems, and the demolition of the existing plant and building sections.
In parallel, all high-, medium- and low-voltage cables were refurbished and re-routed – in conjunction with the construction of new cable routes in Engehaldenstrasse.
The architectural redesign of the substation and the enhancement of its surroundings have further strengthened the urban fabric of the Aare area.
